  • What is the cancellation policy?
If you need to cancel your booking, please contact us no later than 24 hours before the tour is due to start. You will receive a full refund. If you cancel your booking on the day of the tour, you will not be eligible for a refund.
  • What should I wear for the tours?
The tours occur in all weather, so please come prepared with suitable warm and dry clothing ready for the North East weather! You should wear footwear that is suitable for uneven ground and in some cases wet conditions underfoot. High heels not recommended!
  • I have some medical conditions. Will I be able to keep up with the tour?
The pace of the tour is not demanding - we stop regularly and walk for no longer than 5 minutes at a time. The Full City Tour has some sections with less frequent stops but we will certainly pause for rest if needed. Please be aware of your own abilities and check the schedule of the History Tour and the Full City Tour to see which is most suitable for your abilities. Your guide is trained in outdoor first aid, however, you are responsible for managing your own safety on the tour. Please contact us to advise of any conditions or requirements before the tour.
  • Are the tours wheelchair accessible?
No. The natural geography of the city means that we encounter steep stairs and uneven terrain in some places. However, we would still like to help you explore Durham and will try to accomodate your requirements. Please contact us to discuss how we can tailor a tour to meet your mobility requirements.
  • Are the tours suitable for kids?
Absolutely. Whilst not compromising on the depth of information in the tours, your guide is experienced in making sure the tour will be engaging for our younger walkers. Also, kids under 12 can walk for free! Your guide is a teacher and is fully DBS checked.
  • How about dogs?
Certainly! We love dogs at Walkabout Durham. The city streets do get a little busy, so please be mindful of crowds and some streets where there is traffic. However, we fully encourage you bring your dog (free of charge of course) and we will even offer a treat or two to keep those paws bounding along. All pubs on the Pub and History Tour are dog friendly. They may get busy so please be mindful of this if your dog is nervous in crowds.
  • Will we enter any attractions or buildings on the tours?
Apart from the Pub and History Tour (obviously!), the tours are completely outdoors. We aim to guide you through the highlights of the attractions of the city so that you can explore them internally in your own time. We finish our tours at the cathedral doors. On Weekends, this will provide an excellent opportunity to pay a visit after the tour has ended. They have their own fantastic internal guided tours, which you will appreciate much more after walking with us!
  • Can you provide recommendations for places to visit, eat and drink?"
Yes we can. Your guide is a local and will be able to make recommendations based on your tastes. Tell us what you fancy and we can point you in the direction of traditional pubs, cocktail bars, fabulous attractions and a range of places to eat after your tour with us.
  • How can I pay for the tours?
Bookings can be paid for online using a credit or debit card. Unfortunately, we cannot accept payment in cash on the day as we cannot guarantee the tour will go ahead unless customers have pre-booked.
  • Where can I park that is close to Durham Market Place?
The Prince Bishops Car Park, DH1 3UJ, is within 5 minutes walk of the Market Place. Other car parks are found at Walkergate, DH1 1SW, or Sidegate, DH1 5SY. Alternatively, street parking is available on Old Elvet, DH1 3HL.
